Sensory Awareness Training

We were thrilled to welcome the brilliant Hannah Avent to Phoenix Bay for a deeply engaging sensory awareness training session with our staff.

The session was packed with interactive learning and practical tips, helping our team better understand how sensory processing shapes the behaviours and experiences of the young people we work with.

Why does this matter to us?

At Phoenix Bay, we know that behaviour is communication. Many of our students come to us with complex histories – including trauma, neurodiversity, or unmet sensory needs – and what may look like “challenging behaviour” is often a young person trying to cope with overwhelming sensory input.

By deepening our sensory awareness, we can create spaces that feel safer, reduce triggers, and offer young people strategies that help them feel calm, regulated, and able to learn.

This work sits right at the heart of our trauma-informed, relational practice approach. It’s not just about managing behaviour – it’s about understanding the whole child, responding with empathy, and helping them thrive.

Our staff left the session eager for more – particularly looking forward to exploring ECO sensory training in the future to deepen their skills even further.

A huge thank you to Hannah for such valuable insight and to our amazing team for their dedication to continuous learning and growth! 💛
