Admissions
At Phoenix Bay, we welcome children and young people aged 5 to 16 who learn best in a specialist setting. Every student who joins us has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and we work closely with local authorities to ensure each placement is the right fit.
Our students may:
- Experience social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and/or be on the autism spectrum (ASC).
- Present with specific learning needs, communication differences, or a range of complex challenges.
- Benefit from therapeutic input alongside their education to help them thrive.
A Trauma-Informed and Relational Approach
What makes Phoenix Bay different is how we see and support every student. Our practice is firmly rooted in trauma-informed education and relational approaches. We understand that behaviour is communication, and that trust, safety, and positive relationships are the foundation of learning.
From the moment a student arrives, our staff team work to build strong, respectful connections. We focus on regulation before expectation, helping students feel safe and valued so that learning can follow. Families and local authorities often tell us that this approach is what enables students—many of whom have struggled in other settings—to re-engage with education and discover their potential.
The Admissions Process
Placements at Phoenix Bay are always commissioned by the Local Authority (LA). Once a referral is received, our team reviews the information carefully to check we can meet the student’s needs.
If it looks like a good match, we’ll invite the young person, their parents/carers, and LA representatives for a visit. This usually includes:
- A tour of the school and a chance to see Phoenix Bay in action.
- An introduction to key staff who will play an important part in the student’s journey.
- A conversation about our approach, policies, and curriculum.
- Time to ask questions and explore whether Phoenix Bay feels like the right place.
If everyone agrees that the placement is appropriate and in the child’s best interests, we work with the LA and Families to finalise the admission and plan a smooth transition into Phoenix Bay.
Making a Referral
Referrals can only be made through the Local Authority ( SEND Team, Virtual School, Social Workers) If you’d like to talk to us about how Phoenix Bay works, or to find out more before speaking with your LA, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
